For Father’s Day, Audrey took me to a local restaurant’s beer/food pairing event thing with 5 courses made by the house chef, paired with 5 beers from Victory. The presentation was done by Bill Covaleski, Master Brewer at Victory. He was a very cool guy. Anyway, this was the final note I wrote on the sheet for the last course:

If you know Storm King, you’ll probably understand. Leading up to this was Hop Devil, Whirlwind Witbier, V12, and Golden Monkey. So I’m just satisfied that my handwriting is that legible.

Adding recording capacity to a Pace HD DVR

We recently got a second Pace HD DVR from Service Electric to go with our nifty new TV. The only problem is that HD content is big, and the 160GB drive in the Pace box offers a paltry 30 hours of HD content recording. Thanks to some helpful information by a Pace engineer on AVSForum and some parts from NewEgg, I’ve added quite a bit more space. Read on for the details.

Self-Identity Birthday

So today, Feb 9, 2008, is my 29th birthday. While reflecting on it a little earlier today, I realized that this one should be “special” in some way. It’s my “self-identity” birthday… I’m 29 on 2/9 this year. It only happens once in your life, if it happens at all.

I figure it would only possibly work for people born in the first 9 days of the first 10 months (assuming no one lives to be over 109, because, statistically speaking, no one does). That’s 90 birthdays throughout the year on which someone could be the same age as their birthday.

Assuming a uniform distribution of birthdays among the world population (which is probably close enough for this ridiculous farce of a statistics problem), only 24.64% of people are even eligible to have a self-identity birthday.

Factor in the average US life expectancy of 77.8 (for 2004, according to the CDC), and now we’re talking about just 16.97% of the (US) population that should reasonably expect to see their self-identity birthday.

So, you ask, what did I do to celebrate this most special of special days? Well, I worked all night last night, got home at 5AM, slept for a couple hours, and then spent the morning helping Ben and Lauryn take down a wallpaper border in their bedroom. Oh, and I sat around for a few minutes thinking up this silliness. Oh yeah, and then Frank, Jean, Rummy, and company drunk-dialed me to sing Happy Birthday this evening. Do I know how to party, or what?!

But it’s a great chance to post this pic of me, my friend Jim (red shirt), his friend Ken (dark blue shirt), and Tom Kehoe, the owner of Yards Brewing Company in Philadelphia! This was taken in the Yards tasting room on O-fest weekend (which also happened to be Jim’s birthday)!

Big Week!

Wow, it’s been a big week for Colin! First, we’ve begun some preliminary teething… he’s chewing madly on everything and everything he gets near is now coated in a thin layer of baby slobber. He’s also really developing his ability to steal and manipulate things. Observe:

After that, Colin decided to roll all the way over from his back to his tummy. That’s a pretty big milestone, but unfortunately, he hates being on his tummy. So once he starts doing it in the middle of the night and then crying because he’s on his tummy, we’ll have to have some words…

This was the momentous occasion. Yes, I was still in my sleepy pants at 3 PM.
